5 – Tips for Setting up a New Home on a Budget

Setting up a New Home on a Budget

If you’re about to move to a new home, chances are you have a lot going on. There’s selling your old home, packing everything up, moving to the new location, getting the new location ready, and more. This doesn’t even consider things like getting your children situated or setting them up at their new school. With so much going on, it’s common to not have much time think about major decisions. You just decide quickly, and then move onto the next task.

However, doing things this way often results in spending more money. And with many of us working within a budget, spending more than we can afford will just cause more headaches down the road. With this in mind, here are a few tips you can use to set up your new home while remaining within your budget.

1.   Choose a Good Moving Team

The first thing you should think about, if you haven’t already, is which moving team you’ll use. If you really want to cut costs, you’ll do the entire job yourself. This means packing up, renting a truck, moving all your old furniture and belongings out of your current home, and unloading them at your new place. It’s a lot of work, but if you have a decent amount of help with you, it’s possible.

The more common solution though is to hire a good moving team. They handle everything for you, but at a cost. Movers are typically one of the more expensive aspects of a move, but for good reason. That doesn’t mean you need to hire the first mover you find though. Take some time to explore all of your moving options within your area and find the ones that will give you the best rate without sacrificing quality.

2.   Find Affordable Furniture

The next thing you’ll want to focus on is the furniture that will go in your new home. Even if you’re bringing old furniture over from your current place, now is the perfect time for an upgrade. According to a top home furniture store in New Jersey, “Many people start their adult lives with the furniture of friends and family who have previously decided to evaluate their belongings and upgrade their own possessions. If this is where some of your furniture originated, it probably isn’t a true reflection of your stylistic preferences.”

Whatever the reason, if you decide you want some new furniture, there are a few methods you can use for getting affordable pieces. For starters, you can start shopping local garage and yard sales to see if you find anything that suits your needs/style. If that doesn’t work, move your search online and try local item swap groups. For example, look on Facebook to see if there are any groups in your area dedicated to buying and selling used items.

Another option is to search discount furniture stores. Find one of these stores in your area and search through their inventory. You may just find a piece that would work perfectly in your new home, but is still within your budget.

There are plenty of ways to find affordable furniture, if you can put the time in. Start planning early what type of piece you’ll need so that you have plenty of time to look.

3.   Do as Much as You Can Yourself

As is often the case, you’ll want to make some changes to your new home. Maybe you want to put down different flooring, or paint the walls, or change the countertops. You’re spending a lot of money on this home, so you deserve to have it look the way you want.

Of course, all of these changes cost money. To cut costs, see which jobs you can do yourself. For example, painting the bedroom is something you can easily do, and will save you from having to hire a painter. There are plenty of tutorials online that can show you how to do DIY home renovations on a budget. In the end you’ll save money, and the home will feel more like your own since you put the work into it.

4.   Hire the Right Contractors

Finally, some jobs will be too big for you to handle on your own. In this situation, you’ll want to find an affordable contractor. Do your research and find reviews online for any contractor you come across. Get a quote from several different contractors, then compare them against one another. Just like with the movers, find one that comes at an affordable price without giving up quality work.

5.   Moving to a New Home Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

There are plenty of ways to save money when you’re moving to a new home. The keys are giving yourself enough time, doing your research, and doing what you can on your own. If you can do this, you should find it much easier to stay within your budget the next time you need to set up a new home.
