Movable 1001 recliner makes you feel like relaxing on clouds

1001 by Thomas Hiemann and Markus Dilger 1

Designed and constructed by German designers Markus Dilger and Thomas Hiemann, the “1001” is an inviting movable seating area that offers the users a feeling of living on a cloud. ID5 Interactive Systems staff has produced the “1001” as upshot of an iterative draft design process. The primary focus of the team was to seek a solution for permanent adaption of the seating unit’s surface to the human body. They took help of CAD to create specific deformation of the surface.

The “1001” has not been only designed to be compelling as an object, but also as practical piece that can be used in every possible situation. There are over 30 clusters, with each comprising of three elastic rods, which have been positioned on a spherical base to offer support for the relaxing, reclining surface. The project was completed with assistance from Prof. Burkhard Schmitz and Katina Sostmann at the project group ID5, UdK Berlin.
