How many times have you found yourself waking up with your face on the office desk owing to your hectic work schedule that leaves you little time to get some sound sleep? Considering the fact that our lives are shrinking fast to fit into the limited space of our office, designer Athanasia Leivaditou of StudioNL has designed the 1.6 S.M. OF LIFE, a desk that transforms into a bed. The convertible desk bed is intended for use by the office employees to get some hours of sleeping at night between deadlines.

The lid of the desk can be pulled to create more space. While the front of the desk-bed lays down and makes up the base and mattress of the bed, the right façade slopes to double as a headrest. The left side of the 1.6 S.M. (square meters) of Life can be used for storage purpose. The inspiration for the design came from wearing working hours of the designer’s classmates who didn’t have an apartment near the university. The prototype convertible desk/bed is two meters long and 1.6 square meters wide.

The “1. 6 S.m. of Life Desk Convertible to Bed” grabbed the Silver A’ Design Award Winner for Unexpected Design Category in 2010.
