Efficient Ways to Design the Kitchen Floor Plan

Kitchen Floor _1

Although no one accepts, the fact is that the kitchen happens to be the most important room in our home. It is the area where you cook, have your dinners and most probably get the chance to spend some quality time with your loved ones. Hence, you need to pay attention to details when designing the layout of your kitchen. An efficient kitchen layout would enable your kitchen to be fully functional and leave you with plenty of room to move around as well. Here are some tips that would help you plan your kitchen layout easily.

Start with the plan for work triangle

Planning an efficient work triangle is your first step to achieving an elegant and fully functional kitchen layout. This work triangle is made of three components, the stove where you cook your dishes, the refrigerator where you store food and the sink where you wash dishes. The work triangle floor plan would ideally need to place all these three components within reach of each other, so that you can move between them easily without having to sidestep obstacles. Therefore, an efficient kitchen layout plan would need to start by allowing you to trace a single, easy path between these three components.

Move over to the work surfaces

The work surface aka the kitchen countertop is where you would be doing most of your work in the kitchen. An ideal kitchen layout plan would make sure that the countertop is located in the middle of either two of the three main components that constitute the work triangle. This mean the countertop can be located between the sink and the stove, the stove and the refrigerator or the refrigerator and the sink. While smaller kitchens would have to do with a single work surface, larger kitchens can play with ideas of multifunctional workspaces like a raised countertop that can act as a seating area for meals.

Set up the Kitchen Island

If you have a rather large kitchen, then setting up a kitchen island would enable you to cut down excessive travel within the work triangle. Placing at least one of the work triangle functions within the island would prevent you walking all the way to the other components constantly. Smaller kitchens can use temporary kitchen islands on wheels or casters for easy mobility. In addition to adding an extra work surface to your kitchen, a kitchen island can also be used to store items below. Better yet, you can simply roll it out of the way if the kitchen gets crowded.

Consider the Kitchen Shape

There are varieties of shapes you can adopt for your kitchen layout. Here are the most common ones, including the pros and cons that come with each type.

U Shape: With three walls or sides, this kitchen layout plan can be very efficient and would let you cook with minimal intrusion from others. However, it may not be the best choice if you have too many people cooking in the kitchen at the same time.

L Shape: With two sides/walls and two work triangle functions on the same side, this shape would save plenty of space and would open up to the adjacent room on one side, thereby giving room for entertainment. However, it requires a lot of countertop space to work efficiently.

Galley Shape: An efficient kitchen layout plan utilizes all the work triangle functions on one side. It saves a lot of space. However, it can become crowded with too many people unless you open up one end to connect with an adjacent room.

Summary

Planning your kitchen layout would take some time and effort. Make sure to utilize these points when setting up your kitchen in order to increase its efficiency and functionality in many ways.
