Exocarp Chair by Guillermo Bernal is both rough and smooth

Designed by Guillermo Bernal, the unusually interesting Exocarp Chair draws inspiration from the reptiles’ skins and fruits that have tough skin, such as avocados and cantaloupes. The Exocarp Chair hase been designed with the notion of function vs. rough beauty, and is made with algorithmic design and a 3-axis CNC mill on three sheets of birch plywood. The main idea was to separate the two areas where the user’s body touches the chair and the area where an extrinsic agent might invade the chair.

Based on this idea, the area of the chair where user touches it has been made smooth and comfortable. On the other hand, the areas where an extrinsic agent might attack have been done in an irregular texture. The use of birch plywood makes for a beautiful secondary pattern that comes out through the variation of grain. With attention paid to every single detail, the Exocarp Chair asks for immediate attention.
