Decorating your home is not that hard a task if you put your mind and soul into it. Your home should reflect your personality as well as your control over things. It should be able to welcome you with open hands the moment you step inside after a long, tiring day at work. It should be warm and inviting for everyone who steps in through the front door. And most important of all, it should do all these without costing you much. Thankfully, there is way to achieve this. And that would involve concentration on three important aspect of home décor, the colors, the color wheel and the lighting. Here are a few tips to help you out in the same.

The Colors

The colors inside your home reflect your identity as a person. It can make a house look boisterous and loud, as well as tranquil and elegant. Colors can make your home look bigger or smaller, your furniture larger or tinier, and the ceilings higher or lower. All you need to know is how to use the right colors for the right places in order to achieve all these perfectly.

For instance, dark colors can lower ceilings while lighter colors can increase floor space. Warm colors exude energy and can be used for rooms that do not have access to direct sunlight. Cool colors are calm and can be used to reduce light in rooms with access to direct sunlight.

Color Wheel

Having a basic understanding of how to combine two colors in the room can make it easier for you to comprehend the color wheel. The most basic and yet, the most popular format of the color wheel happens to be Sir Isaac Newton’s 10 color wheel that divides the colors into primary, secondary and tertiary colors.

The primary colors are red, blue and yellow which cannot be derived by mixing other colors. The secondary colors of green, purple and orange can be derived by mixing two primary colors. The other 6 tertiary colors can be derived by mixing primary and secondary colors.

Neutral Shades and Colors: These include the colors of black, white and grey that can be used to derive different tones, tints and shades in the colors. White can be used for a lighter hue while black and grey can be used for a darker hue. White works well with different colors, and can be considered as the most complementing color scheme. Color harmonies can also be achieved by combining two or more related colors from the color wheel.

Lighting Options

Lighting can affect every color scheme that you choose for your home. Lighting options for the rooms depend on the particular use of the room as well as the particular time the room would be used more (day or night).

For instance, the living room is always active and so should look bright with artificial light as well. Dark colors and shades can brighten a room that needs to be used after sunset. Soft lights would work well for bedrooms that are areas of relaxation. The kitchen area would need plenty of natural lights, and so should have complementing colors and shades to reflect this brightness throughout the room.

Summary

There is not a standard rule that would let you know how you need to design your home. Consider various options and do some research on your own to see what would work well in your home. Be prepared to experiment quite a bit as well as that is the only way you can arrive at the best design option.
