Researchers at Finland based VTT Technical Research Centre, in collaboration with kitchen fitments maker Puustelli, have developed a new kind of kitchen furniture framework material made from plastic polymers and biocomposites. The new material is being claimed to make kitchen furniture lighter and it will minimize raw material consumption by 25–30 percent and the production carbon footprint by 35–45 percent. VTT’s Research Professor Ali Harlin said that these frames are three time lighter as they contain more air.
Stronger than chipboard and highly moisture resistant, the new material features natural fiber reinforcement, such as sawdust, pulp, flax, hemp or peat. Professor Harlin believe that the innovative material is surely going to interest furniture manufacturers, as it will help them cut down on the production and transport costs.
