Design Miami: Audi R18 Ultra Chair by Kram/Weisshaar

If you are an avid auto enthusiast, especially an Audi fan, you are going to love the R18 Ultra Chair for sure. At Design Miami, German luxury carmaker Audi is exhibiting the R18 Ultra Chair, which has been designed by Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram of Kram/Weisshaar in collaboration with Audi‘s Lightweight Design Center. The stunning chair has been designed in a way similar to that of an R18 racecar using the expertise of Audi lightweight engineers, with 1,500 testers being involved in the development process. Weighing in at a mere 2.2 kg, the Audi R18 Ultra Chair is made from carbon composites, carbon micro-sandwich and high strength aluminum.

The goal behind creating the lightweight yet sturdy chair was goal was to achieve maximum stability and comfort with least consumption of materials. A prototype of the chair, which was shown earlier at the Milan Furniture Fair in April 2012, was fitted with sensors. The final R18 Ultra Chair is on display now at Design Miami (December 5 to 9) and during the period, the designers will give visitors a detailed insight on the development of the R18 Ultra Chair.

On display will be sketches, material samples, models and prototypes highlighting different phases of the development process, along with the industrial welding robot. Also on display will be the R18 ultra racing car, which participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year.
