Kachi-Katah folding chair by Masamune Kaji

Inspired by the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi, which represents imperfection, impermanence and incompletion, the Kachi-Katah is a flat pack furniture unit that creates a comfortable sitting surface. The way a person interacts with Kachi-Katah folding chair is similar to the interaction with Ikebana, the disciplined Japanese art of flower arrangement that aims at bringing together nature and humanity. After unfolding the Kachi-Katah, the user can change the way it stands and the way the blocks of the seatback create negative space.

To create the chair, designer Masamune Kaji studied different folding chairs and construction techniques, and then finalized on the idea of a height adjustable folding chair that could suit everyone’s needs.
