Tell-me Presence lamp offers intimacy over long distances

Maintaining long-distance relationships is not that easy. Designed by Andrew Nip of Canada, in collaboration with Hideaki Matsui, Umesh Janardhanan and Zubin Pastakia, the Tell-me Presence lamp aims to explore the ways networked, physical lighting fixtures can help create intimacy over long distances. The Tell-me Presence is designed as twin-objects for family members, lovers and friends, so that they can feel close to each other. The high tech lighting object has been designed as a cube inside a cube.

While the larger part of the lamp serves as an ambient lighting solution, the smaller cube works as a presence indicator during the transfer of the light “messages” between the people. An upshot of the Physical Computing course with Massimo Banzi and David Cuartielles at CIID, the Tell-me Presence is sure to make long distance relationships less lonely.
