For cabinetmaker, craftsman and furniture artist John Galvin, the two greatest chair designers that ever lived are Hans J Wenger and Finn Juhl. Inspired from the works by these two, John Galvin has designed the Manolo Lounger has been made using five different jointing techniques in the construction and interestingly, there is not a single 90-degree angle in the entire piece. Another inspiring factor for the designer was a sketch of a stylish high heel shoe designed by Manolo Blahnik, which also led to the naming of the chair.
The Manolo chair’s seat has been sloped in two directions and reduced in thickness from 12mm at the front to 28 mm in the centre. The top edge of the chair has been hand carved to complement the curve of the splayed back legs. The slightly splayed front legs flaunt hand carved twisted details and the characterizing brass pin detailing goes from arms into the sea’s back. The Manolo Lounger was unveiled in the Saatchi gallery London as part of the Collect exhibition.
